School workshop

Race Equality First offers a range of age-appropriate workshops for children and young people that can be delivered in schools and youth centres. We can provide workshops aimed at key stages 2, 3, 4 and 5 and bespoke sessions for younger children.

We are able to offer 10 funded sessions for schools in Cardiff on a first come first served basis. Please contact the Equality Officer for Schools and Lifelong Learning at Cardiff Council if your school would like to take advantage of this opportunity.

1. Racism and Equality Awareness (key stage 2) 

This fun and creative workshop aims to help children understand the importance of equality and the reasons why they shouldn't treat anyone unfairly because of who they are. It engages children in thinking about the four concepts of equality, diversity, discrimination and racism.  

Duration 11/2 - 2 hours 

Learning Objectives 

  • Understand the concept of stereotypes and why they can be hurtful;
  • Understand why equality is important;
  • Know what is meant by the word diversity and why it should be celebrated;
  • Know what is meant by the word discrimination and why it is wrong to discriminate against people;
  • Know what to do if you see someone being racist;
  • Understand the difference between racism and discrimination.

 

2. Racism and Prejudice Awareness (key stages 3 and 4) 

This workshop aims to help young people understand the progressive relationship between prejudice, discrimination and acts of violence against individuals and groups of people.  It will support them in developing consequential thinking about their own behaviour and help them to appreciate the importance of promoting fairness and equality.

Duration 11/2 - 2 hours 

Learning Objectives 

  • Understand how holding prejudiced attitudes can lead to taking actions that are unfair and harmful to other people;
  • Understand the concept of discrimination, the impact it has on society and why it is illegal to discriminate against people on the basis of their identity;
  • Understand the concept of hate crime and the impact it can have on individuals and communities;
  • Appreciate the importance of promoting equality and fairness in society.      

 

 3. Racism and Hate Crime Awareness (key stage 5) 

This workshop is designed to help young people understand the impact of racism and hate crime and empower them to report incidents. It involves watching a short film about hate crime produced by Race Equality First and discussing case studies. The workshop will also explore the way the law deals with hate crime and emerging issues such as cyber-bullying and online hate. 

Duration: 11/2 - 2 hours 

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the definition of hate crime and know how the law deals with people who commit offences motivated by prejudice and hate;
  • Understand the impact of racism and hate crime on victims and the reasons for underreporting;
  • Understand the potentially serious impact and consequences of committing online hate crime, both for the victim and the offender;
  • Know how to report incidents of racism and hate crime. 

 

4. Cultural Awareness and Diversity (key stage 5) 

Twenty-first century Wales is a culturally diverse place with many different communities living side-by-side. This course aims to introduce young people to the concept of cultural identity and raise awareness about different cultural practices. The course will also increase knowledge of the diverse communities living in Cardiff.

This course can be adapted to support the Welsh Baccalaureate 

Duration 11/2 - 2 hours

Learning Objectives

  • Recognise the difference between culture and religion;
  • Identify and have an understanding of the diversity of cultures and communities that exist in Wales;
  • Have an awareness of culturally significant historical events that have shaped the diversity of communities in Wales;
  • Identify and explore the impacts of living in a multicultural society.
