All Wales Hate Crime Research Project
Date: April 2010 - September 2013
Project Outline
The All Wales Hate Crime Research Project is a Big Lottery funded research partnership between Race Equality First, Cardiff University and Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan Equality and Human Rights Network. This project has been funded for 3 years to study the nature and impact of hate crime in Wales.
The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) defines a hate crime as “any hate incident, which constitutes a criminal offence, which is perceived by the victim or any other person, as being motivated by prejudice or hate”.
Hate crime devastates lives. It targets individuals at the level of their personal identity and creates fear and distrust within communities, but reporting levels are amongst the lowest for all crimes and there is an evidence gap in Wales that presents a barrier to improving practice.
This project aims to produce good quality, robust data that can be used to help organisations in Wales develop evidence-based policy and practice to combat hate crime and provide appropriate support for victims. In order to achieve our aims we work in partnership with organisations across Wales.
