Cultural Awareness & Community Engagement


Summary

Twenty-first century Wales is a culturally diverse place with many different communities living side-by-side. This course will explore the concept of cultural identity, raise awareness about different cultural practices and approaches to intercultural communication. The course will also increase knowledge of the diverse communities in Cardiff and how to overcome common barriers to community engagement. 

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will 

  • Have an increased awareness of the role that cultural identity plays in their own lives and sensitivity towards the role it plays in the lives of other people;
  • Be able to identify and have an understanding of the diversity of cultures and communities in Cardiff and their history in the area;
  • Understand the differences between culture and religion;
  • Appreciate the challenges of living in a multicultural society and identify common barriers to community engagement;
  • Gain knowledge of good practice in intercultural communication and community engagement.

Who should attend?

This course is suitable for anyone who is interested in increasing their cultural awareness and knowledge about community engagement. It will be particularly relevant for people who work with diverse communities. 

No prior knowledge of the subject is assumed.

This course can be adapted to put more emphasis on cultural awareness or community engagement, depending on the learning needs of participants.
