Minority Ethnic Elders Advocacy Project

Date: Current

Project Outline:

The Minority Ethnic Elders Advocacy Project (MEEA) is an all Wales project funded by the Big Lottery fund for 3 years in partnership with 3 other regional equality councils. Race Equality First (REF) is the lead partner and the delivery of the project is in partnership with Swansea Bay Regional Equality Council (SBREC), South East Wales Regional Equality Council (SEWREC) and the North Wales Regional Equality Network (NWREN).

The purpose of the project is to:

‘Help ethnic minority elders to say what they want, secure their rights, represent their interest and obtain services they need’.

The project will be led by the Steering Committee consisting of partners, and an advisory panel consisting of agencies and ethnic minority (EM) elders. The Project Co-ordinator will manage the project based at REF and 4 Advocacy Officers based at their respective organisations will provide the delivery of the project. REF will cover the county boroughs of Cardiff and The Vale of Glamorgan.

The project will advocate on behalf of minority ethnic elders (MEE) over 50 years of age on over a variety of issues including:

  • Housing
  • Social Work
  • Finance and Benefits
  • Social/Leisure Activities
  • Care Homes
  • Health
  • Domestic/Elder Abuse
  • Family issues/disputes
  • Asylum/Immigration
  • Language Barriers
  • Transport

In addition the project will work with statutory and voluntary organisation who provide services for the elderly to ensure that the needs/concerns of EM elders are heard.

Previous research conducted by REF and national research has shown that EM elders are more likely to suffer discrimination in accessing services or gaining employment.   The other key issue is isolation which has an effect on mental health and well being.

It is envisaged that the project will empower EM elders to take control of their lives, reduce loneliness, improve well being and increase self confidence/self esteem. The project also hopes to influence statutory and voluntary organisations to provide better services for EM elders.
